Lost Paintings are the ones that have either been accidentally destroyed or have been intentionally stolen and are not been found for a long time. The loss of these masterpieces is a big loss to the art history. Some of the Lost Paintings are:

Pablo Picasso was one of the greatest artists of the Renaissance period. His work Le Peintre or The Painter was destroyed and lost in a Swissair plane crash in 1998. This painting was made in 1963 and showed a man painting on the canvas. This was considered one of the greatest artworks of Pablo Picasso. But also killed 229 people on board and destroyed half a million worth precious jewels. Only 20 cm of the painting could be recovered and the rest was lost forever.

3. Leda and Swan by Michelangelo

Created by Michelangelo, this painting depicted the story in which Zeus in the form of a swan seduces Leda. Michelangelo gifted it to one of his students named Antonio Mini who was also a good friend. Antonio took the painting to France and sold it to someone. The painting was last seen in the Royal collection of Fontainebleau in the 1530s. Many painters copied and made new versions but couldn’t get closer. This masterpiece got lost and was never found.

4. The Painter on his Way to Work by Vincent van Gogh

“The Painter on his Way to Work” was Vincent van Gogh’s painting that dates back to 1888. It is an oil painting that had been made in the signature Van Gogh style. It shows a man going to work with his bag and a stick. The painting was kept in Kaiser-Friedrich Museum in Berlin. During the World War 2, it was destroyed by fire. This is one of his self-portrait showing the artist carrying his painting supplies on the road.

5. Medusa Shield by Leonardo da Vinci

This painting is one of the earliest work in the life of Leonardo da Vinci depicting Medusa the famous mythological character. Many of his works have been lost over time but this one is the most mysterious of them. This painting was so realistic that Leonardo’s father was scared of the hairy Medusa. He, without telling Leonardo da Vinci, sold it to the Florentine Merchants at a huge profit. Even though this has not been proved but the painting has not been found from a long time.
